Department History

In 1928 a new department of "Speech and Stagecraft" was formed at San Jose State College. In 1937 Hugh Gillis became chair of what was called the Speech Arts Department. In 1942 that name was changed to the Department of Speech and Drama. In 1963, Speech and Drama split into two departments. Speech became Communication Studies. In 1975, Drama became Theatre Arts. In 2000, our name was changed to Television, Radio, Film and Theatre. More details can be found in the many links below.

Broadcasting's Forgotten Father:
The Charles Herrold Story

This 1996 TRFT PBS documentary shows how the first radio station began in San Jose in 1909. It is now available on DVD for the low, low price of $10.00 (plus 1 dollar for postage). ALL profit realized from the sale will go to TRFT productions.
