| San Jose, CA, June 23, 2009 – San Jose State University’s Professor Bradley Stone has once again taken home the prestigious “Programmer of the Year – Medium Markets 26–79” Award at the 2009 JazzWeek Summit in Rochester, NY, June 18-21, 2009. Stone, the station’s Music Director for Jazz programming, was nominated by radio and records industry subscribers to JazzWeek, the nation’s premier jazz radio Web-based magazine. Stone was a previous winner of this award in 2004 and 2008, and was also nominated for it in 2003 and 2006. Stone states that he is “very proud and humbled to have won this national award. To win an award for something that is a personal passion of mine is a truly a bonus. I have had many mentors in my 31+ years of doing university and community radio, and I hope to be able to mentor others in return”. KSJS, which is primarily a student run radio station, programs a variety of different genres of music, and has a long history of programming jazz dating back to the late 70’s. Dr. Stone has served KSJS from 1985-1997 and 2001- present in a wide variety of rolls. Stone has had a jazz on-air shift at KSJS, dating back to 1985, which currently airs on Monday afternoons. He was the producer and host of the seminal electronic music program “Silicon Sensations”, which aired from 1986-1997. He has been the Jazz Music Director for many years, and currently serves in that capacity (also including blues and world music) along with being one of the station’s Faculty Advisors. He was also a two-time recipient of the Gavin Jazz Programmer of the Year (2000, 2001) – a national award given to jazz radio program and music directors by the leading industry magazine of that era, The Gavin Report, which compiled radio airplay charts for all genres of music. He is frequently an invited panelist and moderator at jazz radio and jazz education conferences across the country. Stone, who is Professor of Chemistry, also serves as Chair of the Department of Chemistry at San Jose State University. Stone is very proud of the accomplishments of the students at KSJS: “I am very happy to have been able to serve the students, University and community in my role as a Faculty Advisor to KSJS, and to be able to mentor the thousands of students who have come through KSJS since 1985. These students and community staff have kept the jazz radio tradition at KSJS very much alive into the 21st century, which I believe is important for our University. I am very pleased to be able to bring this ‘second expertise’ of mine to SJSU, to the benefit of our students at KSJS – one of the best learning laboratories on campus!” JazzWeek is responsible for compiling the principal chart devoted to jazz radio airplay across the nation, and is generally recognized as the most important and influential jazz radio chart by the music industry today. The 2009 JazzWeek Summit was held June 18-21 in Rochester, NY, at which the final awardees were announced. Dr. Stone was also one of the conference organizers (he had the responsibility of organizing the panel sessions), was also an invited moderator (Music Director 101 - Programming: Making Tough Choices in the Era of “CD Glut”) and panelist (“Music Director 103: Incorporating Jazz Fusion, Latin, Brazilian and other World Musics, into a Jazz Clock” and “Music Director 102 - Positioning: New Releases vs. Classic Catalog”). |
